MAIZE DEPARTMENT

The main activity of the Maize Department includes the creation of superior corn hybrids of standard grain quality with different vegetation lengths and production purposes, as well as hybrids with specific properties. Maize breeding is based on the combined application of conventional breeding methods with the use of modern technologies that accelerate the breeding process (dihaploids, MAS-marker assisted selection, genomic selection). Scientific research work in the field of maize breeding is focused on: phenotyping and genotyping newly created lines and hybrids of maize; improvement of the testing system of experimental and registered hybrids using modern experimental designs and biometric tools; development and application of prediction models, application of remote sensing technology in mass phenotyping in order to collect a wide range of data on morphological, physiological and agronomic properties of newly created hybrids of maize, potential application of genomic selection, etc. Maize cultivation technology – includes the development of cultivation technology in different production systems in order to fully realize the genetic fertility potential of the newly created NS maize hybrids. Maize seed production includes the maintenance and multiplication of basic categories of seeds (basic seed production), the control of seed crops, as well as the production and processing of sufficient quantities of high-quality genetically pure seeds of high hybrid vigor for all growing regions. Scientific research work in the field of seed production is focused on the study of the physiological and biochemical properties of seeds and the development of new technologies for the purpose of superior seed processing and treatment.
